2020 Hirose History Memorial Museum Special Exhibition “Allies Aiming for the National Interest: Godai Tomoatsu and Hirose Saihei ~The incident of the sale of the Development Mission’s property seen from the Hirose family documents~”

Tomoatsu Godai and Saihei Hirose established various companies such as the Osaka Stock Exchange, the Osaka Chamber of Commerce, and the Osaka Copper Company in order to foster the immature private capital after the Meiji Restoration. Furthermore, with the aim of direct trade with overseas countries, Godai gathered the power of the Osaka business community, including Hirose, who supported him, to establish Kansai Trading Co., and as a first step, he attempted to export Hokkaido products to China. However, he was embroiled in the incident involving the sale of the property owned by the Development Commission, was criticized for false reporting in the newspapers, and passed away without making an excuse. In this special exhibition, we will introduce the incident, focusing on the relationship between Godai and Hirose, who aimed for the national interest, and the letter of defense that Godai sent to Hirose. *This year, through efforts by the alumni association of Osaka City University (founded by the fifth generation), the textbook (high school Japanese history) has been partially revised regarding the incident regarding the sale of property owned by the Development Commission.
