Sumitomo Western Painting Collection - Selection of Masterpieces of Modern French and Japanese Paintings

The art collecting started by the 15th head of the Sumitomo family, Sumitomo Kichizaemon Tomoito (pen name Shunsui, 1864-1926), was passed on to his eldest son Kan'ichi (1896-1956) and the 16th head of the family, Tomonari (1909-1993), and built up an excellent collection with an emphasis on both the West and the East.
In particular, two paintings by Claude Monet that Shunsui purchased in Paris during a study trip to Europe and the United States in 1897 are noteworthy as being some of the earliest Monet works brought to Japan. The Sumitomo family's Suma villa was decorated with a valuable collection of Western paintings, including these Monets, providing Japanese artists with the opportunity to view them at a time when there were no art museums in Japan yet.
This exhibition will feature approximately 80 masterpieces by artists including Monet, Jean-Paul Laurens, Asai Chu, Kanokogi Takeo, and Kishida Ryusei from the Sumitomo Collection, housed at the Sen'yaku Hakukokan Museum in Tokyo.
Please enjoy a selection of carefully selected masterpieces from French paintings and modern Japanese Western paintings.
